Gaming is the most popular online activity for children and teens. It is also one of the most dangerous. Predators know that kids let their guard down while gaming — they are relaxed, having fun, and far more likely to trust someone who shares their hobby. Here is how to keep your child safer in online gaming environments.

Why Gaming Is a High-Risk Environment

A 10-year-old boy met someone on Roblox who played with him every day after school. The "friend" gave him Robux, helped him build in-game, and eventually asked to move to Discord for "better voice chat." On Discord, the grooming continued in private. The boy's parents had no idea until a school counsellor flagged concerning behaviour.

Platform-Specific Risks

Roblox

Our partner Project Morris documents hundreds of predatory accounts on Roblox daily. Predators use game chat to make initial contact, then move children to Discord or Snapchat for private communication. User-generated content on Roblox can also contain hidden inappropriate material.

Fortnite

Voice chat is enabled by default in party modes. Predators join random squads, build rapport through gameplay, then suggest moving to a private party or external messaging app. The in-game gifting system can be used to build trust.

Minecraft

Multiplayer servers often have open chat. Private servers can be created by anyone. Realms (private servers) can be邀请ed into by strangers. The creative and social nature of Minecraft makes it easy for predators to embed themselves in communities.

Discord (Gaming Integration)

Discord is not a game, but it is the primary communication platform for gamers. Almost every gaming community has a Discord server. This is where private conversations happen, and where the most serious grooming occurs.

Warning Signs in Gaming

New "Best Friend"

Your child talks constantly about a new friend you have never met, who they met online. They may defend the friendship aggressively when questioned.

Secretive Gaming

Your child closes screens when you walk by, plays with headphones always on, or games in their room with the door locked.

Gifts and Currency

Your child has in-game currency or items they cannot explain. Someone is giving them things. This is a classic grooming tactic.

Switching Platforms

Your child mentions someone they met in a game but now talks to on Discord, Snapchat, or Instagram. The platform switch is a major red flag.

What Parents Should Do

The Golden Rule of Gaming Safety

If your child met someone in a game and that person wants to move the conversation to Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, or any private messaging platform — that is the moment to intervene. The platform switch is the single most reliable indicator that grooming is beginning.
